Choosing the right electrics

After choosing your type of towbar, you then need to decide on which type of electrics is you want. Basically, the socket depends on what you will be towing. Our team are here to help advise you and keep you on the right track.

Various types of electrics available

Single electrics

These are 7 pin electrics, they power the lights on your trailer or caravan. These are the minimum legal requirements when towing, they are also suitable for bicycle carriers

Twin electrics

Twin electrics use two of the 7 pin sockets, they can power both the road lights, reverse and interior electrics. For example customers often run a fridge or freezer from these. They work by being wired to the car which tows the caravan to enable the power to it.

13 Pin

Caravans which were made after 2008 in the UK come installed with 13 pin connectors. Basically, these are the twin electrics merged into one socket.

Getting the right electrics is very important, especially with caravans it can make a big difference to your functionality.

Wiring Harnesses

For your information, we also supply vehicle specific wiring harnesses. Available in both 7 and 13 pin kits, we can install these to the interface of your vehicle. Available to be used with the original connectors they can also communicate with the vehicle management system if required. Enabling, for example, trailer stability programs which are already present in modern day vehicles.

Fixed Flange Ball

A common towbar in the UK, used for towing caravans and heavy trailers. You can tow a trailer or caravan with this system and even transport bikes on the back of your car whilst this is fitted. ( within the recommended weight limit). Furthermore, it also has a height adjustment facility if required.

Detachable Flange

These are an exclusive design to Witter. Offering the versatility of the fixed flange bar, whilst leaving just a small part visible when it is detached.

Fixed Swan Neck

Not as popular in the UK as other countries. This is mainly due to its lack of flexibility and compatibility for accessories and fittings as some of the other designs we have. Bike carriers are available for this type of towbar, the unfortunate part is you cannot tow at the same time, unlike other models.

However, out of all our towbars, this is the one which is most likely not to set those reversing sensors off on your vehicle. For vehicles which have a bumper shield, unfortunately, it cannot be installed.

The Detachable Swan Neck

This is very popular in Europe. Being detachable you can remove it when not in use. However, once it has been attached you can still access your boot. Further attachments are also available separately, especially for bike carriers. Unfortunately though with this towbar, you cannot carry a bike and tow at the same time.
